Tento balíček obsahuje komponenty textového formátovacího nástroj GNU troff. Hlavní balíček, groff-base, obsahuje tradiční nástroje jako je troff, nroff, tbl, eqn a pic. Tento balíček obsahuje přídavná zařízení a ovladače pro výstup ve formátech DVI, HTML (pokud jsou nainstalovány také doporučené balíčky jako gs, netpbm a psutils), tiskárny HP LaserJet a tiskárny Canon CAPSL LPB-4 a LBP-8.

Zařízení X75, X75-12, X100 a X100-12, které umožní prohlédnutí výstupu groff v okně X window pomocí standardních písem X11, jsou zde obsaženy. V předchozí verzi byly v samostatném balíčku groff-x11.
